Update: Puppy Pistachio doing well but gradually losing amazing green pigment.
A puppy born with green-colored fur on October 9, 2020, on the island of Sardinia (in Pattada, Italy), quickly became an internet sensation due to its unique green fur.
Italian agriculturalist Cristian Mallocci was overjoyed when Spelacchia (Italian for “mangy”), one of his eight dogs, gave birth to the green-furred pup.
The other puppies have white fur, the equivalent color as their mixed breed momma.
Meet Pistachio, a puppy born with green-colored fur. The changing of the fur is believed to happen when pale colored puppies have contact in their mother’s womb with a green pigment called biliverdin https://t.co/JEGwBX8ujv pic.twitter.com/53celknzsI

Mallocci, who runs a farm on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in conjunction with his brother-in-law Giannangelo Liperi, has said that green denotes good luck.
Vets have hypothesized that the changing of the Pistachio’s fur is the likely result when pale-colored puppies have contact with a green pigment called biliverdin in their mother’s womb.

It is incredibly extraordinary for a dog to be born with green-coloured fur. Biliverdin is the same stuff that results in green color in bruises.
However, Pistachio’s unique colour is not foreseen to be a permanent phenomenon. The bright green his fur had on the day of his birth continues to fade daily. It is expected that the colour will continue fading as he grows older.
Cristian Mallocci has announced that Pistachio is not leaving the farm, though his siblings will be given away; Pistachio will stay with his mom to look after the sheep.
While Pistachio’s brothers and sisters will be given away to new homes, Mallocci will keep Pistachio on his farm and raise him up to look after the sheep with Selacchia his mother.
A green puppy has been born in Italy. His name is Pistachio. 💚
While rare, puppies can be born green because of a substance called biliverdin in their mother's womb. The green will eventually fade. pic.twitter.com/CPm8U7aPcB

Mallocci affirms that Pistachio is a symbol of hope and luck amid stress and sorrow caused by the COVID pandemic.
Perhaps Pistachio was assigned by nature to put a smile on people’s faces.
Hope it has placed a smile on yours too.
