Bernardo Alvarez, 62-year-old Filipino ‘Snake Man’ who declared himself to be immune to venom, died after a cobra bit him on the tongue as he tried to kiss it.

Bernardo Alvarez, 62, captured the killer Northern Philippine Cobra on July 9 after it wriggled through the snake wrangler’s neighbourhood in Mangaldan town, Pangasinan province.

Using his skills, he tamed the deadly creature to the admiration of his cheering neighbours.

However, while he showed off the snake to onlookers, Bernardo playfully held the cobra close to his lips, in a gesture that looks like he was trying to kiss it before the cobra lurched at his mouth and bit his tongue.

He shrieked in pain before dropping the cobra, then crumpled to the ground and died shortly after while waiting for physicians to arrive. Angry locals also killed the snake.

Bernardo Alvarez ‘s sister Teresa Oca said a police officer and a physician arrived to check on him and told the family that Bernardo Alvarez had no pulse so they tried to resuscitate him.

Provincial Health Officer Dr Anna de Guzman said the venom of the cobra’s bite can cause paralysis, which is what took effect on the snake man.

“This paralysis could stop the breathing of the victim, affect the flow of oxygen in the body, and eventually stop the beating of the heart.”

“They were unsuccessful since the cobra’s venom was too strong. We don’t know how we could accept what happened to him.”

Bernardo’s family performed the funeral arrangements at their home. They are set to bury him this week.

Naturalists and vets have widely recognised the Northern Philippine Cobra as one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Its poison directly attacks the respiratory system of its sufferers, so a lone bite could be extremely dangerous.
