A suspect is currently in custody. He is alleged to have posted a manifesto in which the author describes himself as a white supremacist. Eleven of the victims were black, and two were white.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. EDT, on Saturday, May 14, 2022, the shooter allegedly arrived from Conklin, New York, to the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue, in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Buffalo, New York.
The shooter was wearing body armor and a military grade helmet and was carrying a head mounted camera through which he livestreamed the attack on Twitch.
As he approached the scene, he was recorded on his livestream saying, “Just got to go for it.”
He shot four people in the parking lot, three of whom died. He then went inside the store where an armed security guard, former Buffalo Police Department officer Aaron Salter, shot at him.
Due to to the shooter’s heavy body armor, Salter’s bullets did not stop him, and the suspect shot Salter, who died at the scene.
He then continued to walk through the store, shooting victims, before returning to the front of the building, where patrol officers were able to talk him into dropping his gun after he put it to his neck.

The accused, identified in court as Payton S. Gendron, is an 18-year-old white male. Police said he is not from Buffalo and travelled for hours to the supermarket.
He was enrolled at SUNY Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York. A college spokeswoman confirmed via email that he is no longer enrolled.
Authorities claim to have evidence that Gendron was motivated by “racial animosity”.
Gendron reportedly had an account on the chat platform Discord, which he allegedly used to “[post] to-do list items in preparation for the attack”, according to the Daily Intelligencer.

The author wrote that he adopted these ideological stances after visiting /pol/ on 4chan beginning in May 2020.
The manifesto includes biographical information, including a birth date, which are identical to that of the suspect in custody.
It was originally posted on Google Docs the evening of May 12, two days before the attack, and according to file data, it had not been modified since.
It includes extensive details about the planned shooting, such as: “Zip code 14208 in Buffalo has the highest Black percentage that is close enough to where I live.”
