The Orlando Free Fall, the drop tower attraction on International Drive that was the scene of Tyre Sampson Fall, will be taken down, according to the ride’s operators.

The ride was closed indefinitely after the 14-year-old Tyre Sampson fell to his death in March after slipping through the restraints of his seat.
“We are devastated by Tyre’s death. We have listened to the wishes of Tyre’s family and the community, and have made the decision to take down the FreeFall,” announced Ritchie Armstrong, with Orlando Slingshot.
“In addition, Orlando Slingshot will honor Tyre and his legacy in the classroom and on the football field by creating a scholarship in his name.”

Officials said the timeline for taking down the Free Fall will be announced at a later time.

According to investigators, adjustments were made to the Free Fall to allow riders over the ride’s weight limit. Sampson’s autopsy found he weighed more than 380 pounds, almost 100 pounds over the recommended weight limit for the Free Fall ride.

A Quest Engineering investigation determined Sampson slipped through the gap between the seat and safety harness.

Tyre Sampson, 14, died in March after falling from the Free Fall ride about halfway down the 400-foot drop.
